Man, fuck this though. This is the hallmark of charlatanism. I’m going to admit that I’ve been guilty of the “blind fire from overhead, look at the LCD to see if looks good” approach, but I learned my lesson pretty quickly since it almost never yields an interesting shot.
It reminds me of a dude I saw recently who took that a step further. Not only did he keep blind firing his camera and staring at his LCD in the middle of the action, but he’d go right up to the band to do it. I’m talking inches away from each musician. I was shooting that night as well, and I’m afraid to develop my film from that set. I’m pretty sure every other frame is going to feature a heavily tattooed arm reaching in, shoving some rich kid turd Nikon DSLR right in a performer’s face, aiming it vaguely at them, and firing off a blinding flash every time. At roughly $7 per roll, it doesn’t seem worth it to find out for sure.
